This paper examines controversial claims about the merit of 'unconscious thought' for making complex decisions. Following his remarks he answered questions from the audience. Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking, Malcolm Gladwell's 2005 New York Times bestseller, describes how snap judgments, first impressions, and intuitions can be more useful than painstaking rational thought. Gladwell dissected the snap judgment process by telling the story of the shooting of Amadou Diallo by New York City police detectives in 1999. He also explained how marketers used crucial first seconds to manipulate consumers and their impressions of the product being marketed. The book explored the concept of intuitive decision-making and snap judgments in a variety of situations and explained the benefits of such decisions.
